MORE ABOUT POWER

Solar power in Qatar has gained significant importance as the country seeks to diversify its energy sources and reduce its carbon footprint. In 2011, a substantial portion of electricity was generated by burning natural gas, given Qatar’s vast reserves. The Qatari agency responsible for developing the nation’s renewable energy sector, Kahramaa, announced in 2012 that the nation would install 20 gigawatts (GW) of solar capacity by 2030. It is projected to be composed of 12 GW of solar thermal, and 8 GW of photovoltaics. At the time of this announcement, Qatar had only 0.001 gigawatts of installed solar energy capacity. A total of 10 GW of renewable energy was expected by 2020, and 20 GW by 2030. 500 megawatts (MW) of photovoltaics and 400 megawatts of concentrated solar thermal (CSP) was expected to be completed by early 2013. Also in 2013, solar power in Qatar had achieved grid parity and was able to produce electricity at costs comparable to conventional sources.
